A Survey of the Freshwater Mussel Fauna of the Little Kanawha River Basin,

Abstract

The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources, is currently undertaking a statewide survey of West Virginia's freshwater mussel resources. The purpose of this statewide survey is to identify where healthy populations of freshwater mussels exist. This will provide baseline data for future wastewater management decisions. Once identified, these populations will be sampled periodically for changes in diversity and/or for tissue and shell analyses of pesticides and metals. Areas not found to have mussels in initial surveys will be checked periodically to determine if improved water quality has brought about a return of the mussles.
