Some Thoughts on the Subject of Dynamic Elastic-Plastic Analyses of Rapid Crack Propagation and Crack Arrest,
Abstract
Despite the fact that the basic assumption of linear elastic fracture mechanics - contained-yielding - is violated for a crack that grows, most attempts to characterize rapid crack propagation and arrest are nevertheless rooted in LEFM. Together with the growing necessity to analyze crack arrest under conditions where large scale plasticity is expected, this fact is prompting researchers to develop dynamic elastic-plastic analyses. Starting from LEFM-based analysis procedures that form the current state-of-the-art, this paper attempts to provide some perspective for this evolutionary trend in dynamic fracture mechanics. Emphasized are some of the potential dilemmas that face the researchers pursuing this subject. (Author)
