Testing Polycarbonate for Utilization in the Production of Transparent Enclosures,

Abstract

This paper looks at the polycarbonate now being utilized in the fabrication of high performance aircraft enclosures. Polycarbonate is now being utilized both in a monolithic form and in conjunction with traditional enclosure materials; such as acrylic, and glass. It is the intent of this paper to look at the testing and evaluation of polycarbonate prior to processing into acceptable enclosure hardware. The present procurement specifications such as MIL-P-83310 or L-P-393 are inadequate in addressing materials properties that are critical in the processing and fabrication of acceptable hardware. Since material properties can determine acceptable hardware and therefore the yield from any given lot of material, this can dramatically effect the price of finished goods. In addition, these material properties can ultimately impact the quality and life of the finished enclosures.
