Comparison of Bullet Resistance of New and Aged Polycarbonate

Abstract

The effects of aging on the ballistic characteristics of monolithic polycarbonate were studied. The program was carried out in two parts. Part I compared the decrease in bullet velocity after penetration of new to aged polycarbonate panels, and Part II compared the behaviour of new to aged panels where penetration does not occur. No appreciable difference was noted in residual bullet velocity between those bullets which penetrated the different panels. In assessing bullet resistance through non-penetration, no significant change was observed due to are degradation of the polycarbonate. It was noted however, that both the artificially aged and naturally aged specimens behaved somewhat unpredictably and both showed signs of being susceptible to the initiation of fractures upon bullet impact.
