Use of Strain Energy Density as a Basis for Finite Element Model Development,

Abstract

The paper examines the use of strain energy density distribution within deformed structures as a criterion for the development of progressively refined finite element models. This criterion has been used to study the dynamic characteristics of a cantilever beam and a diesel engine sump pan. The technique has been used to identify regions within the deformed structure which need a more comprehensive modelling consideration. (Author)
