The Management of Soft Tissue Injuries in the Combined Injury Patient,
Abstract
The management of soft-tissue injuries has challenged trauma surgeons since the early times of the contemporary era. However, despite the advances in resuscitation, surgical techniques, antibiotics, etc., the simultaneous development of sophisticated weaponry of war, increased incidence of motor vehicular and industrial accidents, and increased incidence of crime have kept the issues of soft-tissue-injury management in the forefront of trauma surgery. Moreover, the possibility exists, however remote, that with the greater use of domestic and foreign nuclear energy, major industrial accidents could occur. Also the misuse of radioactive material by untrained hands may generate a combination of general trauma in association with total-body irradiation, which challenges trauma surgeons to develop strategies for the care of these patients. The purpose of this discussion is to address the specific procedures associated with the management of soft-tissue injuries and to incorporate thoughts applicable to the combined-injury scenario.
