AFHRL (Air Force Human Resources Laboratory) Program for Artificial Intelligence Applications to Maintenance and Training,
Abstract
The young science of artificial intelligence has not yet produced a technology that can be used to solve real world problems in a consistent manner; however, within the next 10 years it is expected that practical application of some forms may be commonplace. The time is ripe for military laboratories to start stimulating and guiding research in the development of systems which would extend the capabilities of the military forces. AFHRL is initiating a program to participate in the development of AI technology as it applies to maintenance aiding and training. Measurable outcomes could include lower mean time to repair, a greater operational readiness, and a stabilized corporate experience base resistant to personnel attrition. Other benefits could include enhanced personnel productivity, greater training efficiency, and decreased task loading on weapon systems personnel. This program has three principal goals. First, the program will apply AI technology to real Air Force problems in the maintenance aiding and training domains through an integrated system. The second goal is to establish a capability for the conduct and examination of artificial intelligence research. The third goal will be to assist/consult with other Air Force organizations in the development and exploitation of the evolving AI technology.
