Health Psychology: An Overview and Selected Applications,

Abstract

During the past twenty years a number of significant changes have taken place in the health care field. Concurrently with these changes, there has been increasing awareness of the significant roles of environmental factors and human behavior on health maintenance and recovery from illness. The most recent report of the Surgeon General of the United States documents that the greatest health problem in the nation today is disease secondary to dysfunctional habits, behaviors, and life styles. Maladaptive behaviors are the leading cause of sickness and death in our society. Data clearly suggest a strong positive relationship between adherence to salutary health practices and good health. Psychologists are preeminently qualified to develop programs which will assist people to lead healthy life styles. Smoking, the leading preventable cause of death in the nation in 1982, is emphasized to document its disastrous impact.
