The Pathogenesis of Pulmonary Parenchymal Smoke-Inhalation Injury,

Abstract

In some circumstances, the causes of diffuse pulmonary parenchymal injury are direct and obvious, as in extensive viral infection, aspiratino of gastric contents, phosgene poisoning, etc. In many other circumstances, such as pulmonary failure developing in association with sepsis, nonthoracic trauma, etc., the cases are indirect and more obscure. Is it into the first, second, or both categories that we would place five victims with major burns and evidence of smoke inhalation who develop signs of pulmonary parenchymal injury several hours to a few days after injury?
