Status Report - Biochemical Indicators of Infection,

Abstract

In the course of studies to determine if there were differences in the metabolic response of rats of burn injury versus burn injury complicated by infection, differences which could be employed to detect and/or confirm the presence of infection in severely injured individuals, a series of factors were discovered in perchloric acid (PCA) filtrates of whole blood taken from burned-infected rats which responded predominantly to infection and were only slightly increased by injury. This article is a summary of what is known about these putative indicators of infection as well as an assessment of their value and limitations as indices of infection
