The Cardiopulmonary Metabolic Response to Trauma and the Degrees of Sepsis. A Brief Review,

Abstract

In summary, the response to clean trauma and acute, easily-treated sepsis in the previously healthy patient is a short term, carefully controlled, hormono-metabolic physiologic response designed to mobilize the oxygen delivery required to support the increased oxygen consumption that occurs and designed to mobilize the energetic and synthetic substrate required. In part, the increased visceral protein synthesis which occurs is secondary to increased amino acid release from muscle as a largely balanced mixture and this is in major part probably related to placing the muscles of ambulation at rest and to the increased neuroendocrine catabolic activity.
