Reduction of Safe Separation Distances between Hazardous Materials in Conveying Operations,

Abstract

A full scale test program was conducted by Southwest Research Institute in support of the U.S. Army's manufacturing methods and technology program. The primary objective of the program ways to evaluate and select transport bucket materials that would significantly reduce safe separation distances for hazardous materials in transit between buildings at Army Ammunition Plants. Several plastic materials were evaluated and based on experiments conducted in this program it was determined that plastic bucket materials offer a significant advantage over aluminum and stainless steel as they relate to the reduction of safe separation distances. These test simulated the operating conditions and confining environments in selected in-plant procedures. This paper will address the pre-test evaluations, test techniques, the data and the results achieved.
