Emission Factors from Deactivation of Munitions. Part 1
Abstract
Calculations and measurements are becoming available for the identification and concentrations of pollutants which result from the deactivation of most types of munitions. Open burning and detonation have been confirmed as environmentally sound for certain munitions. For recovery of metals from some munitions, the preferred deactivation methods involve incineration or chemical treatments. A catalog is being compiled for munition emissions. Energy recovery during deactivating has been demonstrated with a few highly energetic materials, and significant progress has been made in materials recycle and recovery. Details from the reports on energy and materials recovery are not repeated here.
