Numerical Investigation of the Stability of Diffusion Flames Near Extinction and Ignition,

Abstract

A numerical investigation is made of the near-ignition and near-extinction characteristics of chambered diffusion flames for arbitrary Lewis numbers. In particular, for an S-shaped response curve, both dynamic ignition and extinction are found to occur at the turning points. While the stability of premixed flames has received considerable attention in the mathematical theory of laminar flames that has been developed in the last decade or so, diffusion flames have almost been ignored. Even in the context of plane flames subjected to one-dimensional disturbances there is much to be done, in particular when the response curve of steady states is S-shaped.
