Characterization of Dyed H-70,

Abstract

A program was conducted to characterize a dyed H-70 formulation which could be readily detected visually if leakage occurred and which could be used as the monopropellant in the F-16 EPU. The most promising candidate dye was a dimethoxybenzantrone designed as Vat Green 1. Solutions of the dye in H-70 were characterized with regard to stability under various conditions, visibility, sensitivity, physical properties, material compatibility, and catalyst compatibility. At a concentration level of 70 ppm of dye in the H-70 was readily detected visually and the formulation met all the program goals except that the dye impaired the catalytic activity of SHELL 405 catalyst in sub-scale thruster tests.
