Unsteady Aerodynamics and Dynamic Aircraft Maneuverability,

Abstract

Future air combat can be expected to differ greatly from that of the past--a result attributable to advances in enabling aircraft technologies and paced by a new generation of air-to-air weapons capabilities. Anticipated developments in the areas of structures and structural materials, control systems and the vehicle-pilot interface may be coupled with an emerging new understanding of unsteady aerodynamic behavior to provide a new level of dynamic maneuverability heretofore not thought possible. The case for the development of a 'supermaneuverable' flight capability is built on both anticipated operational need and perceived technological opportunity. The primary objectives in this are to describe the potential of this unique flight environment and discuss its underlying unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.
