A.T.R. 42 Carbon Fibre Flap Repair Design and Inspection,

Abstract

The new commuter aircraft known as ATR.42 developed jointly by AEROSPATIALE and AERITALIA is the first aircraft of its category to be equipped with CFRP flaps. All the Airlines which have placed orders on this aircraft are not equipped with heavy installations required by working on the composite materials. Repair schemes using a simple technology have therefore to be developed. Partial or complete tests have shown that a perfect understanding of the structure ability to withstand the different types of damage was required beforehand. Repair methods using in situ pre-impregnation of dry fabrics have been developed with the relevant inspection method. The mechanical strength of the various repairs and the effects of inadequate damage repairs have been investigated through tests.
