All-Dielectric Ruggedized Optical Cable with Fiber Reinforced Plastic Grooved Spacer,

Abstract

A project was undertaken to develop and test an all-dielectric compact optical cable for low fiber count applications. Cables were made utilizing 900 micron tight buffer fiber and a fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) grooved spacer with continuous helical grooves. These cables exhibited superior crush and impact resistance which are traits sought after in many applications. The primary result of this project was to demonstrate the advantages and feasibility of FRP grooved spacer cables. (Author)
