Rapid Restoration System Using a New Connectorized Cable and New Connectors,

Abstract

A new restoration system has been developed for a sudden breakdown of an optical fiber cable outdoors. The system is composed of a connectorized cable having closures at both ends, rapid restoration connectors and a tool kit. The closure is 370 mm in length, and 38 mm in the outer diameter, and 700 g in weight. Within the closure there are damaged fiber receiving adapters to which connectors of the connectorized cable are terminated. The closure has a clamping hardware for a damaged cable and is watertight. The rapid restoration connector was designed based on the FC-type connector and can be mated with FC connector. It takes about 30 minutes for a worker to restore the two-fiber cable with this system. The coupling loss of this system is less than 0.5dB for a multi-mode fiber, and 2.0dB for a single mode fiber using index matching material.
