Non-Interferometric Air-Gap Connectors for Single-Mode Fiber Cable Loss Measurements,

Abstract

A simple end-face angle can be incorporated on air-gap-type testset cable connectors, and connectors in general, that eliminates mulitple reflections and their associated interference effects. In addition to being insensitive to small changes in end-face separations, this style of connector is also less sensitive to changes in source wavelength. This paper will report the results of our investigation of these interference effects for various fiber end-face angles and separations. We will also describe a method to measure end-to-end cable losses, that minimizes measurement uncertainties introduced by the use of average expected connector loss values and also from multiple reflections that are typical of most air-gap connectors.
