A Statistical Comparison of AC and DC Spark Tests,

Abstract

This study statistically compares spark test faults from spark testers using ac and equivalent dc potentials. Two spoolers that rewind PVC insulated copper conductors were equipped with a 3 kHz. ac bead chain electrode spark tested and a dc bead chain electrode spark tester respectively. Fault data from approximately 10 million feet of wire were recorded for each spark tester, sorted by wire type and analyzed. Results indicate that the fault distributions are comparable when the dc voltage is 1.4 times the rms ac voltage. (Author)
