An Analysis of Field Performance of Cellular Insulated Filled Telephone Cable after a Decade of Service,

Abstract

It is twelve years since cellular insulated filled telephone cable was introduced to American telephony systems. Despite early concerns regarding certain properties of expanded insulation, cellular insulated filled cables have proven to be a dependable cable design with optimal transmission properties, good reliability, and low maintenance. Shortly after the introduction of cellular insulated filled telephone cable, cables from early production runs were installed in various field test sites. Annual electrical measurements have been made and the electrical performance of these cables has been documented. Results of physical testing on samples recently recovered from the field test sites show the condition of cable materials after a decade of service.
