New Silicone-Modified Polyimides,
Abstract
New silicone-modified polyimides have been prepared from a functionalized polydimethylsiloxane and aromatic comonomers. The flexibility of these materials can be varied by the size and quantity of the silicone 'soft block' segment. The molecular weight of these copolymers can be controlled by the degree of imidization, chain stopper level, and cross-linkable side groups. The properties of these polymers can also be varied by the introduction of other co-monomers with cross-linkable or curable side units. These materials offer moderately high tensile strength, good impact resistance, low smoke, are nonhalogen and have excellent flame resistance. The extrusability, fire resistance, and electrical properties of these materials should make them suitable across a broad range of existing and emerging applications. (Author)
