High Precision Attenuation Measuring Method Pre-Condition for the Quality Assurance of Single-Mode Fiber Transmission Links,

Abstract

In the first part of this paper the different attenuation measuring methods are compared and their suitability for high precision attenuation measurements in single-mode fiber transmission links is analysed. It will be demonstrated that the cut-back method and the insertion-loss method offer the best pre-conditions regarding high precision. Subsequently the influence of the measuring wavelength, the coherence properties of the used optical source and the excitation technique on the measuring accuracy is discussed. Corresponding theoretical investigations and measuring results will be presented. (Author)
