Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers,

Abstract

Bend and microbend performance of various singlemode optical fibers with matched cladding are investigated. Microbending sensitivity is determined with both a sandpaper test and a new test that uses wire mesh. The new test is found to have certain advantages. In particular, the mesh test can be carried out on bare fibers; therefore the intrinsic sensitivity of fibers to microbending can be characterized directly, without concern about the influence of coatings. Such bare fiber results are also reported. (Author)
