A Fiber Optic Cable Monitoring System,

Abstract

An electronic monitoring system has been developed which provides an effective means for monitoring outside cable plant and equipment for water entry. Consisting of a centra-office terminal and remote sensors, the system monitors cables, splices, repeater sites, and other critical locations. Operating over any available metallic circuit the system will sense and signal the location of any water ingress. Several systems of this type are already in operation in Western Canada. The design has been selected for use on major portions of a new fiber optic Trans-Canada Telephone System now under construction. (Author)
