Development of High-Performance Composite Fiber-Optic Overhead Ground Wire,

Abstract

We have developed a new high-performance composite fiber-optic overhead ground wire (OPGW), which contains newly designed six-fiber units, for large capacity transmission and application to extra high voltage power transmission line. Six single-mode optical fibers coated with silicone buffer are stranded around a fiber-reinforced plastic strength member, and then wrapped by a thin heat-resistant plastic tape instead of the extruded secondary coating used in conventional OPGW. Because of this new construction of the six-fiber unit, the new OPGW has the following advantageous features compared with conventional OPGW.
