Safety and Handling of Hydrazine

Abstract

Hydrazine products are widely used as chemical building blocks oxygen scavengers, chemical explosive intermediates, monopropellants and bipropellants. Although these forms of hydrazine have had a long history of safe and successful use, hydrazine has recently received much attention due to its toxic properties. The latest toxicological information on hydrazine and the regulations governing its use are reviewed. Hydrazine's nature, what to do about personnel exposure, how it can be absorbed into the body and what effects exposure may create are all discussed. Discussion will focus on how employee exposure to hydrazine can be minimized by simple and effective engineering controls, supplemented by mandatory use of protective equipment and proper handling procedures.
