The Incident of the L&N (Louisville and Nashville) Train Missile Hardware Laden Fire,

Abstract

This report describes the railcar fire that destroyed the Ready Service Ring (RSR) used in the Mk 26 Missile Launcher System. Events leading to and during the railcar fire are given in a technical manner. The fire was caused by ignition of the wood floor by the hot metal sparks coming from overheated brake shoes and wheels. The two possible sources of hot brake shoes and wheels were: 1) a hand brake that was left on at the last point of departure for this train; or 2) a hidden defect in the air braking system on this car.
