The Use of Pi2 Pulsations as Indicators of Substorm Effects at Geostationary Orbit,
Abstract
The magnetospheric substorm is the most frequent and perhaps the most important mechanisms of energy exchange over a large volume in the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. This paper reviews some of the characteristics of Pi2 pulsations observed at mid-latitudes on the ground and assess the use of certain characteristics in indicating various magnetic and particle perturbations occurring during substorms. Spacecraft charging and its effects at geosynchronous orbit are also reviewed. Finally, there is a brief discussion of how Pi2 pulsations might be used to predict intervals of spacecraft charging at geosynchronous orbit.
