Vision and Visual Protection in Fast Jet Aircraft,

Abstract

Aircrew flying fast jets such as the F16 require high visual standards in order to be able to react quickly to tactical and emergency situations within their environment. This paper discusses the basic visual physiology of importance in flight together with the visual standards and associated test methods that are necessary for optimum performance. The paper concludes with a review of the hazards of solar radiation together with suggestions for the optical and spectral quality of visors and corrective eyewear.
