S-Bend Theoretical Profile for Minimum Radiation Losses,

Abstract

Curved waveguides are a key element in optical integrated circuits. High density circuits require that the total length of curved waveguides is minimized However, radiation losses limit practical length. This radiation is the sum of transmission losses alpha sub t (at the entrance and the exit of the bend) and bending losses alpha sub r. Transmission losses can be evaluated from overlap integral between optical fields in straight and curved waveguides.
