Stress Relief: Proof of the Mechanism of Photo-Induced Index Change,

Abstract

It is demonstrated, for the first time, that stress-relief is responsible for the photo-induced index changes in optical fibers. This mechanism is a consequence of the breakage of wrong-bonds in the glass network through single- or multi-photo absorption, which allows relaxation of the stresses. The index changes through the stress-optic effect.
