A Hue Based Computer Automated Method for Non-Intrusive Temperature Evaluation Using Thermochromic Liquid Crystals,

Abstract

This paper presented a fully automated method for hue based color recognition, that allows non-intrusive temperature determination in a fluid by quantification of the bue changes in the chiral-nematic crystals mixed with the fluid. The experimental procedure used an RGB, 3-CCD chip camera that allowed control of gain sensitivity and color temperature. An automated algorithm, ARCA, has been developed for temperature determination with only initial operator intervention. It is shown that the algorithm for hue determination is insensitive to saturation changes as long as saturation is kept above an operator generated threshold. Using the FFFT method the velocities and temperatures can be determined using the same visual information. (Author)
