Measurement of the Flow Around a Finned Circular Cylinder with a Fibre-Optic LDA.

Abstract

The paper describes the application of a fibre-optic LDA to measure the sub-critical velocity field a finned circular cylinder in cross-flow. The probe head was located inside the cylinder and the beams were focused to intersect in the flow through a 'window' in the cylinder wall. In this way it was possible to make measurements in the passages between the fins which am optically inaccessible by conventional LDA techniques. The difficulties implementing this technique and obtaining a usable signal-to-noise ratio for near-wall measurements from the subject of this paper. Measurements are compared with the results of an earlier study of the flow about a plain circular cylinder. (Author)
