The Characterization of Particle Jet Dispersal,
Abstract
The characteristics of particle jets of loading 4kg/cu.m, issued, as a range of velocities, into a non-turbulent 6m/s airflow were determined from data obtained using the flow field measuring technique Particle Image Velocimetry. The self-similar velocity profiles, half-width and centre-line acceleration were all ascertained and an assessment of the influence of injection velocity on the jets' characteristics was made. The findings were as follows. For jets issued at non-zero relative velocities to the background airflow, as the relative velocity increased the self similar velocity profile of the jets increased, with the rate of increase decreasing with increased relative velocity. The gradient of the jet half-width increases asymptotically with increasing jet velocity. The acceleration of the centre- line axial velocity component with downstream position decreased linearly with increasing jet velocity. (Author)
