An Experimental Evaluation of LV Signal Processing in the Flow Over a Backward-Facing Step,

Abstract

The flow over a backward-facing step (ER=2, Re sub H = 14,280) was measured using a three component laser velocimeter system. A new signal processing system using the burst autocorrelation principle provided higher data rates and measurements closer to the wall than before. Detailed velocity profiles and the full stress tensor values were obtained in the recirculating and reattachment regions. The reattachment length was found to be 7.9 step heights. Downstream of the step the lateral normal stress is approximately equal to the longitudinal value. The offset in the vw profile from earlier measurements was found to be due to the resolution limitations of the previous measurement systems. (Author)
