Simultaneous Determination of Refractive Index and Droplet Size Using Mie Theory,

Abstract

A method for determining size and real part of the refractive index of droplets is presented. The droplets are illuminated by a laser beam and the scattered light is observed in the forward hemisphere at scattering angles Theta from about 30 deg to about 80 deg and in the backward hemisphere around the rainbow angle Theta sub K. From these observations two relationships between the radius and the real part of the refractive index can be derived, which are used to determine the radius and the real part of the refractive index of the droplet. Suggestions for experiments are given.
