The Onset to Turbulence in a Buoyancy-Driven Cubical Enclosure Using a LDA Measuring System,

Abstract

The transition from a laminar natural-convection flow to a turbulent flow is studied both experimentally and numerically for air in a cubical enclosure. Special effort was taken in the experimental configuration to make the boundary conditions resemble those of a side-heated adiabatic cubical enclosure. It is shown that radiation between the walls, conduction in the horizontal walls and heat losses to the environment have a significant influence on the temperature at the horizontal walls and consequently on the transition of the flow. Temperatures and velocities were measured with a thermo-resistance probe and an 1-D LDA system. (Author)
