The Combined Use of Liquid Crystals and PIV for Thermo-Convective Flow Analysis,

Abstract

In this paper we present a novel measuring technique for the simultaneous measurement of temperature- and velocity fields of buoyancy and thermocapillary driven liquid flows. The method is based on combination of particle-image-velocimetry (PIV) and the application of liquid crystals as tracer particles. The technique is described in some detail. Experimental results are discussed and compared with data obtained with data obtained by alternative measuring techniques and theoretical predictions, respectively. (Author)
