Turbulent Velocity Profile LDA Measurements in Pipe Flow of a Non-Newtonian Slurry with a Yield Stress,

Abstract

Velocity measurements by laser Doppler anemometry for fully-developed turbulent flow of a transparent non-Newtonian slurry are described. The slurry was measured to be a yield-power-law (Herschel-Buckley) fluid by a concentric-cylinder (Couette) viscometer. Flow measurements were performed in a 52-mm diameter pipe flow facility. Results are presented for profiles of the four unique Reynolds stress terms for fully-developed turbulent pipe flow. The mean axial velocity profile in law-of-the-wall coordinates is in good agreement with a turbulent pipe flow theory for a Herschel-Buckley fluid. (Author)
