Laser Doppler Measurements of a Grid-Generated Turbulence Undergoing a Volume Reduction,

Abstract

An homogeneous turbulent flow submitted to a uniform compression is investigated using LDV. The initial turbulent flow which is produced by drawing a grid in a closed cylinder is compressed by means of a piston. Ensemble averaging is used to compute velocity moments. The experimental set-up specially designed for this purpose is described. Preliminary results are given including; compression without initial flow, free decay of grid-generated turbulence and combination of the two phases; generation of turbulence and compression. Finally, results are compared to the predictions of a recent generalisation of the standard Reynolds stress model. (Author)
