From Atoms to Solids

Abstract

Under certain experimental conditions a periodic structure can be induced in the mass spectra of clusters of metal atoms. For example, if the clusters are heated with a laser beam, those with high stability resist evaporation. The resulting mass spectra reveal that clusters with closed electronic shells and clusters with perfect icosahedral symmetry are unusually stable.
