A Magnetic Trap for Simultaneous Confinement of Neutral Atoms and a Non-Neutral Plasma

Abstract

Three methods have been proposed for the simultaneous confinement of neutral atoms and a non-neutral plasma in close proximity D.H.E. Dubin, Phys. Plasmas 8, 4331 (20Ol ). This note discusses one of these methods, in which particles are trapped in an axially-symmetric static magnetic field with a magnetic minimum in a ring around the axis of symmetry. Axial symmetry is required for confinement of the rotating non-neutral plasma, and the magnetic minimum traps the neutral atoms. This trap design may be useful for the production and confinement of cold antihydrogen.
