European Capability Block 4

Abstract

The European Component (EC) of the layered Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) expands our BMDS capability to defend the Homeland, Allies and deployed forces in Europe from limited Iranian long-range threats by establishing both an Interceptor Site and a Midcourse Radar site in Europe. The European Interceptor Site (EIS) is planned as a United States (U.S.) facility on foreign soil, supported by a European Sensor Sites (ESS), also planned as a United States (US) facility in Europe. Both the EIS and ESS will interface with US command and control nodes in Europe and CONUS through upgrades to US communications at Ramstein Air Base (AB), Germany. The Command and Control communications interface upgrades in Europe is known as the European Communications Interface (ECI). The EC also includes sustainment for fielded assets. EC will continue funding for expansion of the BMDS capability via execution of two stage missile testing. The BVT-01 flight test will be conducted using energy management and pitch over maneuvers. The flight test will also gather pertinent data on the performance of the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV). The EC will enable a quality of service sufficient to defeat the threat and to ensure interoperability with the BMDS.
