Death as Existence: Symbols and Metaphors in the Islamic Promotion of Martyrdom

Abstract

This project explores the phenomenon of "suicide bombers" through a conceptual analysis of the notions of death and existence, as they appear in the promotion of Islamic martyrdom, both classic and contemporary, Shia and Sunni. The aim in such an endeavor is to understand how such a portrayal can entice an individual to voluntarily engage in self-destructive missions. In seeking to understand the choice of death over life.
