Development of Large Blue-Phase Liquid Crystal in Single-Crystal Form

Abstract

This research seeks to push the state-of-the-art by developing a process to produce large 3D photonic crystals which exhibit dynamic optical properties. The use of LC-based blue phases have tremendous possibilities in enabling high contrast, low voltage, large dynamic range soft matter constructs. To date, small dimension systems have been produced. This work seeks to enable large dimension systems by controlling the thermodynamics and kinetics of the formation process.
