The physics of transverse mode instability-induced nonlinear phase distortions in large area optical fiber amplifiers

Abstract

Address the limits on coherently combined phased-array high-energy lasers imposed by phase distortions resulting from spatial beam distortions. We propose to investigate the physics of amplification and beam propagation in this regime, and how the use of vortex modes may allow further power scaling. Longer-term, this will improve the phase control and thus the overall system parameters.
