Properties Of Ionic Liquid Ferrofluids

Abstract

This project will examine the impact of changes in magnetic nanoparticle size and concentration and stabilizer chain length on ionic liquid ferrofluid rheology. We thus expect to gain the understanding required to enable resolution of the deficiencies in usage with first generation ionic liquid ferrofluids. These problems included loss of spiking performance after sustained electrospray emission and a potential problem due to the large magnetic particle size not allowing mission-relevant values of specific impulse.
