Development of an Origami-Inspired Mechanism utilizing Soft Material

Abstract

The research goal is to achieve new types of building blocks for use in origami-inspired mechanism design. We will investigate soft materials and new fabrication techniques for soft origami mechanisms and design a novel mechanism utilizing a soft material. The key idea is to use local elastic components with origami design to enable local energy storage for quick deployment, shock absorption and deformation tailoring. Soft origami actuation designs that are capable of modular actuation and complexity minimization will be developed. We will design unique applications to verify the feasibility of the developed mechanisms. This application will enlarge the scope of origami applications and demonstrate the design potential of soft origami.
